Snowbird Season: How to Ship Your Car Between Northern and Southern States

Every fall, thousands of retirees and seasonal residents trade cold northern winters for warmer weather down south, then head back when spring arrives. If you split your year this way, having your own car at both homes makes life a lot easier. Driving it yourself, though, means days on the road, hotel stays, and hundreds of extra miles on your vehicle.

Here’s how to ship your car between northern and southern states without the stress, and what to plan for at each end of the season.

How to Plan Your Snowbird Car Shipment

Timing is everything during snowbird season. Demand on north-to-south routes peaks from October through December, and the return trip gets busiest from March through May. Because so many people ship at once, carriers fill up quickly, so booking two to four weeks ahead gives you the best chance of locking in your preferred pickup date at a fair price.

Most snowbirds choose open transport, which is the most affordable option and works well for everyday vehicles on these long interstate routes. If you keep a convertible, classic, or luxury car at your seasonal home, enclosed transport keeps it protected from road debris and winter weather on the northern leg of the trip.

Door-to-door service is especially helpful when you’re shipping from one home to another. The carrier picks up as close to your northern address as it can safely reach and delivers straight to your condo or community down south, so there’s no need to arrange rides to and from a terminal.

Plans don’t always go as scheduled. If a flight changes or you need your car waiting the day you arrive, faster shipping options can move your pickup up, even during the busiest weeks of the season.

Before pickup, remove personal items, leave about a quarter tank of gas, and take dated photos of any existing scratches or dents. If you’re leaving a home empty for the season, arrange for someone to hand over the keys in case your schedule shifts.

The most popular snowbird routes connect the Northeast and Midwest with warmer states in the South and West, and each destination has its own rhythm. Car shipping in California, for example, picks up in the fall as seasonal residents head for the desert communities and the southern coast.

Snowbird season doesn’t have to mean a long, tiring drive twice a year. Book early, choose the transport type that fits your vehicle, and let a trusted partner handle the miles in between. That way, your car is ready and waiting whenever you arrive, whichever direction you’re headed.
