What to Expect During Your First Orthopedic Physical Therapy Visit

Walking into a physical therapy clinic for the first time can feel a little uncertain, especially if you’ve never done it before. Will there be a lot of paperwork? Will it hurt? Will you leave with a clear sense of what’s actually wrong and what happens next? Most of the uncertainty around that first visit comes from simply not knowing what the process looks like, and once you do, it tends to feel far more approachable.

An orthopedic physical therapy evaluation is built to answer those questions quickly. The first visit is less about diving straight into treatment and more about understanding exactly what’s going on with your body, so that everything that follows is targeted at the actual cause of your pain rather than a guess at it.

Walking Through Your Initial Evaluation

The visit typically starts with a conversation. Your therapist will ask about your injury or pain, how it started, what makes it better or worse, and how it’s affecting your daily activities, work, or sport. This intake process is a standard part of orthopedic physiotherapy in Chicago, and it matters as much as any physical test, since it points the therapist toward which structures and movement patterns are most likely involved.

From there, the evaluation moves into hands-on assessment: checking your range of motion, strength, posture, and how you move through specific tasks that relate to your complaint. The therapist is looking for patterns, compensations, and asymmetries that explain not just where it hurts, but why it’s happening in the first place. This is also when you’ll usually get a first, small taste of hands-on treatment, since many therapists begin addressing what they find right away rather than waiting for a second visit.

By the end of the session, you should walk out with a clear picture: a working diagnosis, a plan for how many visits you’re likely to need, and a few things to start doing (or stop doing) at home right away. Nothing about this first visit should feel like a mystery by the time you leave.

The first visit sets the tone for everything that follows, and a good one leaves you with real answers instead of more questions. If you’ve been putting off that first appointment because you weren’t sure what to expect, know that it’s a conversation and an evaluation first, treatment second, and that structure exists to make sure your recovery plan actually fits what’s going on with your body.
