Table Tents 101: A Simple Way to Boost Restaurant Upsells

Table tents are one of the most overlooked tools in a restaurant’s marketing arsenal, yet they sit exactly where a guest’s attention already is — on the table, in the sightline between the menu and the first sip of a drink. Unlike an insert tucked into a folder, a table tent stays visible for the length of the meal, gently reminding diners about a seasonal cocktail, a dessert special, or a happy hour promotion. For restaurants looking for a low-cost way to increase average check size without adding to a server’s workload, table tents remain one of the simplest tools available.

Why Table Tents Work So Well for Upsells

The biggest advantage of a table tent is that it sells without a person having to do the selling. A server can mention the nightly special once, but a well-designed table tent keeps reminding the table for the entire visit — before drinks arrive, during the meal, and right up until dessert decisions are made. That passive, repeated visibility is exactly what drives incremental orders that a guest might not have thought to ask about.

Table tents also give operators flexibility that a printed menu doesn’t. Because they’re small and inexpensive to update, they’re ideal for limited-time offers, holiday promotions, loyalty programs, or cross-promoting a bar program alongside the food menu. Many restaurants rotate a handful of card inserts seasonally while keeping the same durable holder in place, which keeps the tabletop refreshed without reprinting anything larger.

Hotels running in-room dining programs often use table tents alongside their hotel menu covers to promote room-service specials without redesigning the full menu.

Placement is worth thinking through as well. A table tent works best when it doesn’t compete for space with place settings, condiments, or a candle, and when its message is short enough to read in a glance rather than a full menu-length pitch. The goal is a nudge, not a second menu — one clear item, one clear reason to order it.

Done well, table tents are a small investment with an outsized return: they cost little, require no extra staff effort, and quietly do the work of upselling on every table, every shift. For restaurants that haven’t leaned on them yet, it’s one of the easiest wins available for lifting check averages.
